Designer Meredith Weiss, president of Long Island-based Merri Interiors packed a lot into this modest-sized, vintage-style kitchen, including a double oven, a warming drawer, a full refrigerator and full freezer, a wine refrigerator, a large cooktop with a wood hood, two sinks and a microwave.
When assessing her client’s storage and display needs, Weiss realized it would be most beneficial to have cooking items in one location and the collection in another area, making it a focal point.
At one end of the island, with a lower height and a contrasting gray-blue countertop reminiscent of soapstone, a prep sink sits conveniently across from the cooktop.
The client had requested subway tile, but Weiss suggested something less basic and pulled out the various gray tones from other elements like the countertops, cabinets and floors.
The client had admired a similar light fixture she saw in the designer’s home, and Weiss used it here to add a sculptural element above the island and play up the 60s vintage vibe.
When designing the hutch to hold the green milk glass collection, Weiss sought to mimic a piece of furniture the client’s grandmother had.
“It gives you that old vibe, and the collection provides the hutch with a little pop of color even though it’s an overall neutral tone,” said the designer.
