Airy and light-filled, the new room, designed by Enhance Building Company, is a radical change from the clients’ previous kitchen, a dark, wood-paneled space dating from the 1970s.

The banquette backs up to the peninsula, reinforcing the link between the kitchen and making serving and clean-up easier. The table was fabricated from a walnut tree that stood on the property before the house was constructed.

To guard the walnut counter against water damage, the apron sink is surrounded with an inset slab of soapstone. The island is oriented toward the living room, facilitating connections with friends and family.

Originally, the ventilation design called for an internal blower, but noise considerations dictated a switch to an external blower system. An energy-efficient, forced-air geothermal system heats the entire home quietly and cleanly.
