Designer Tamara Hubinsky of New York City-based Tamara Hubinsky Interiors set out to create this happy kitchen out of a previously dark and dated apartment space.
Before the redesign, this kitchen had aging, dark cherry cabinets, a lack of natural light and a dysfunctional layout.
To preserve the existing flooring and avoid issues with the multi-unit plumbing and ventilation, Hubinsky was challenged to keep everything in its existing location. Along with a refresh of colors and finishes, she updated the space by eliminating the bar-height countertop, creating a banquette under the window and incorporating a designated drinks area.
The main island has prep area with a double sink, dishwasher and pullout trash unit on one side. The other side has three columns of drawers, with space for a variety of extra plates and less-used kitchen supplies.
The banquette offers optimal seating for the family, as well as a pop of color with blue-dotted wallpaper and blue upholstered seats.
Hubinsky cut down on the amount of wall cabinetry the client had to let in more light but was able to optimize storage by incorporating interior organizational compartments.
