Designer Marg Hyland and her husband took 35 years of experience and an empty nest as an opportunity to create a dream home. The Orlando home may have lacked much visual interest or color, but its great room layout and character had potential. ““It reminded me of a model house that you would buy in a craft store,” she said. “The house was cool on the outside, but when you flipped it around it was just a blank wall.”
Centered around a palette of Tiffany blue and an antique glass dining table, the room has a peaceful atmosphere designed for informal gatherings. Hyland spruced up the home’s original pieces, such as the originally black island, by aging or painting them.
The cypress cabinetry complements the granite countertops and backsplash. “Eventually I want to take the backsplash out and put in glass tile to make it lighter,” said Hyland.
This elegant style continues in the master bath, which centers on a freestanding, cast-iron tub. “It’s my own ritual to get in the bath at least once a week,” said Hyland.
The single glass sink looks out on a lake through antique glass windows, which were installed for privacy. Around to the windows, the same wash of Tiffany blue swathes the once demure bath in color.
