A repeat client of Sacramento, Calif.-based Nar Design Group approached the firm looking for a new-build kitchen design that incorporated a warm and subtle modern farmhouse style.
According to designer Ashlee Richardson, the biggest challenge of this project was the high ceilings and wide-open floor plan. Touches like wood beams on the ceilings helped bring the ceilings down to scale.
A request of the client’s was for a large island for entertaining. To ensure everyone is included in the conversation, Richardson laid out the seating around a corner so that guests can easily engage in conversation with the host at the prep sink.
“It was a challenge to create a sense of intimacy and warmth in this space,” said the designer. “To do so, we incorporated wood cubbies that extended beyond the window and cabinet height to communicate the height of the space and tie them together.”
At the bar station, the cabinetry is done in the same maple, slate-stained cabinetry as the island but with chicken wire uppers for a taste of the pastoral.
A wine refrigerator and an audio system are hidden in identical cabinets within the symmetrical towers of the bar station.
