Jamie and Morgan Molitor of Minneapolis-based construction2style faced multiple challenges within this remodel, which included the kitchen, living area, mudroom and powder room. Along with opening up the space, the team needed to make it functional for a growing family of six – including newborn twins that arrived the week demo started.
“Our clients wanted us to get started regardless and were so gracious through the entire project,” said Morgan, adding that the renderings she created with Chief Architect and SketchUp helped the clients to not loose patience. “Being a family of six, they were always on the go with activities and used to the chaos.”
Once the walk-in pantry was removed and relocated to cabinet space next to the fridge, the entire kitchen opened up to the living areas and formal dining room.
A coffee station gave purpose to the area where the pantry used to be. A white backsplash with a geometric pattern in cream was used to differentiate the coffee station.
Inspired by the Molitor’s own kitchen renovation, the clients wanted a look that mixed dark-stained cabinets, a white countertop and backsplash, gold hardware and natural wood touches.
“The gold deck-mounted potfiller that we got our eyes on for the first time out at KBIS was also a favorite!” said Morgan. “That tied in with the gold sconces that stand out and add touches of pop.”
Building a vanity that fit perfectly within two walls was the biggest challenge of this powder bath. The Molitors had to configure the vanity to the shape of the walls to make sure the fit was seamless. They cut off some of the sides to adjust the areas that weren’t perfectly flush.
“We installed this timeless wallpaper just behind the vanity, giving the space a pop of fun without overdoing it,” said the designer, adding that the wallpaper was left over from another project.
“We love how the floating bench and shelves tie into the floating oak vanity in the powder bathroom and wood hood and shelves in the kitchen,” said Morgan, referring to the mudroom area.
