The concept of the rustic kitchen is redefined through textured counters, cabinets and handcrafted tiles. The arch-top, six-lite door, exposed beams and windows inset into the thick exterior wall established the architectural style for the room. After the existing narrow kitchen was gutted, an interior wall shared with the dining room was pushed back two feet to gain much-needed space.

The design team at Sarah Stacey Interior Design invested hours trying out different stains to ensure the white oak cabinetry (which had a natural yellow cast) matched the cooler undertones in the zellige tile backsplash, flooring and countertops. Although the designer knew the client favored dark and heavy decor, she was able to pull the homeowner out of that a little bit by still focusing on natural elements but keeping them lighter in color and finish.

One element of the old kitchen the client loved was open shelving. Stacey incorporated this feature into the base of the island, where it offers convenient storage while remaining visually unobtrusive. When it came to specifying light fixtures, the designer felt she had exhausted all metallic possibilities. “I leaned into the natural materials palette and thought of clay – that’s where the terracotta sconces on the range wall came from,” said Stacey. Painting the door blue elevated the room and made it something unique. It adds another bit of unexpected character to the rustic kitchen.
