A destination location and a young man’s love of entertainment inspired this hacienda-style kitchen. Designed by Sandra Espinet, this Los Cabos, Mexico, kitchen embraced its locality with a modern, masculine sensibility.
Made of a mix of unfinished and glazed terracotta, the backsplash melds together blue, crème and rusted red colors. “It’s masculine since it is not glossy throughout, plus it has a Mexican feel to it as well,” explained Espinet.
Mexican walnut cabinetry complements the living room’s reclaimed beams. While the lower cabinets are embellished with swirling designs, the upper boast iron detailing to match the iron chandelier above the island.
Reclaimed antique brick makes up parts of the ceiling, including the cupola above the island.
The countertops mimic marble with black and white spots on a crème background.
“We wanted the island large and in charge,” said Espinet. The bi-level island’s light stain breaks up the room and provides a place for guests at the bar and the host at the lower side of the counter. “It looks like a guy would cook in this kitchen,” she added.
