An Insider’s Look at the Das Design Competition Winners
Residential Winner: Camino Norte
“We wanted to bring the serenity of the outdoor environment into the interior of the home with certain finishes and products, such as the beautiful veining of the marble slabs adorning the master bath walls, the sleek and organic lines of the Victoria+Albert tub and vanity basin and the waterfall effect from the brilliantly chrome-plated Axor Massaud tub filler.”

Residential Winner: Camino Norte
“In the master bathroom, we selected a beautiful marble in a satin finish to clad the walls of the master shower and bathtub area. The veining created a pattern that showed the immense scale of the room. Using different fixtures from the Axor designer catalog paired alongside beautiful pieces – like the honed marble – allowed us to the bring perspective and focus back to the space without sacrificing its aesthetics and scale.”
– David Weiss, Palm Springs, Calif.-based PS Modern, LLC
Residential Honorable Mention: Willowick Remodel
A 1963 residence in the heart of one of Houston’s premier urban neighborhoods, the original design was admired for its novel seamless indoor/outdoor living made prominent with floor–to–ceiling windows.

“In the bath, custom-cut porcelain tiles create a rug tile, which anchors the space and unifies the separate elements. Barn doors seductively control visibility into the closet and echo the rhythm of the tile rug. Metal boxes intersect glass enclosures to accommodate cleaning products and keep the view unobstructed. Dry-stack white quartz walls add texture and interest, with trough lighting softly illuminating the accent wall. A wider glass window and the addition of a skylight bathe the once dark bathroom with natural light.”

Residential Honorable Mention: Swan House
“[This project] is a new 2016 home in the shell of a 1960 heritage. We kept the indoor/outdoor vibe, walls of glass, clean lines, and hints of regency while incorporating a great room with an open kitchen, an expanded master bathroom, a media room and of course en-suite bathrooms for all bedrooms.”
-Kevin Kemper, Thunderbird Heights, Calif.-based H3K Design
Residential Honorable Mention: Swan House
“The master bathroom was completely blown out and turned into one gorgeous bathroom. We captured space from the garage to create an en–suite bathroom for a bedroom as well as squeezing in a powder room. We even were able to carve out space for a formal dining room!”
-Howard Hawkes, Thunderbird Heights, Calif.-based H3K Design
Residential Honorable Mention: Heijnen-Kavelaars Garden Residence
The Heijnen-Kavelaars Garden Residence is designed to unite elements of landscape and architecture in everyday living. Set on a corner lot, the home wraps around a central pool and garden, opening up views to the garden throughout the house and connecting to terraces on the second floor.
