NARI Announces Key Certification Update

February 12, 2020

To align remodeling professionals with newly emerging industry best practices and current technologies, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) will introduce a comprehensive update to its Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) certification in early 2021.

This important certification announcement showcases the serious commitment of NARI to lead the remodeling industry as demand for universal design projects continues to show steady growth. The updated UDCP certification will be supported by a new study guide and examination, and approved by a Certification Board comprised of select Certified Remodelers committed to the highest standards in ethics and education.

The UDCP certification update marks the third NARI certification to be adjusted to meet member needs in just three years. In January 2019, a fully revised exam and study guide for the Certified Remodeler (CR) was added to cover business and building science subject matter. And in January 2020, the association introduced changes to the Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler (CKBR) certification to encompass new topics in universal design and lighting.

Currently, NARI offers eight total certifications also including: Certified Remodeler, Certified Remodeler Specialist, Certified Remodeler Associate, Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler, Certified Lead Carpenter, Certified Remodeling Project Manager and Universal Design Certified Professional. All of these designations require members to pass a proctored examination to demonstrate competency and knowledge.

“While some organizations are eliminating certifications, we expect to see a continued year-over-year increase of 20% in the number of certifications earned and awarded to NARI members,” NARI CEO David Pekel, MCR, UDCP, CAPS said. “Ongoing demand in home remodeling, increased competition and remodelers’ commitment to strengthening their own business capabilities are just some of the contributing factors. NARI members also know that earning certifications—along with the NARI name itself—ensure homeowners can connect to the best, most highly trained talent in the industry.”

Exams for all NARI certifications are held in May, August/September and December 2020.
