Designer Stephanie Lang of Delafield, Wis.-based Kowalske Kitchen & Bath was challenged to revitalize a historic bathroom lacking in function and modern amenities. While the homeowners appreciated its authentic Art Deco style, they turned to Lang to make this bathroom more practical and modern for their busy family of four.
Before the redesign of this historic bathroom, this space sported a pink palette, a single pedestal sink and questionable plumbing. The clients had a tight budget, but they were hoping to include a double vanity, more counterspace, better lighting and linen storage in the redesign.
After taking space from a hallway linen closet and the adjacent bedroom closet, the design team was able to include the storage and double vanity sink the homeowners wanted. A full plumbing inspection and update were also done. Knowing the costs of updating the plumbing ahead of time, the team shifted some of their original material choices to stay in the clients’ budget.
A vintage octagon tile was used in the niches and paired with budget-friendly subway tile for a mix of modern with a touch of the past in this historic bathroom.
“We selected frameless cabinetry to get the most storage space possible in our vanity,” said Lang. “The need for drawer storage for the children led us to the double central drawer stacks.”
“I love that we kept the architectural material palette soft and neutral while including tile and finishes that were appropriate to the original time period,” said the designer.
