Successful kitchen designs are never about a single component. They result from a holistic vision and the seamless marriage of a myriad of elements—which is why award-winning designer Joan DesCombes, CKD, president of Architectural Artworks Inc., enjoys her job so much. “I love being able to do a complete design concept and have all of the pieces I want work together,” she said. “We don’t simply design a room where we’re just doing cabinets. We’re doing everything.”

In her case, “everything” also includes incorporating a sensitivity to her clients’ needs, personalities and, well, appearance. “Because I came to design from the fashion and cosmetics industry, I will make sure you look good in your kitchen,” said DesCombes, who once ran international marketing for cosmetics giant Estée Lauder. “I will not put colors in a kitchen or select a style that doesn’t complement you.”

Of course, a flattering environment requires flattering lighting. And to ensure that her clients always look their best, whether they’re entertaining or relaxing with family, DesCombes takes pains to create an integrated solution that consists of not only a variety of light sources that work well together, but also a control system that is as versatile as it is user-friendly. In terms of the latter, she likes Vantage’s TPT650 control panel (below), which allows users to operate a variety of home systems, including lighting, via an in-wall LCD touchscreen. For appliances, DesCombes prefers those that either make a statement—such as the Sub-Zero Pro 48—or integrate completely into their surroundings. Already a fan of the company’s 700 series, she is enthusiastic about its latest addition, the 727 integrated column (below). Measuring 27 in. wide, the all-refrigeration and all-freezer units offer point-of-use convenience, expanding design possibilities in the kitchen, as well as other areas of the home. DesCombes said, “We can just do different things with it.”

Wolf’s microwave drawer (below) affords DesCombes a similar flexibility. “It enables me to design well,” she noted, especially in situations where a conventional model would call too much attention to itself. “We don’t like microwaves that are too visible,” she added.

Countertops, however, are another story. Among DesCombes’ favorite materials are glass, which she sometimes backlights with LEDs for dramatic effect, and Pyrolave lava stone (below), whose rich hues can add a wow factor to any kitchen, be it contemporary or traditional in style. “The colors are wonderful,” she said, “and it gives you an additional texture. We’re always looking for another texture in a space.”

But while DesCombes is a strong proponent of the total design concept, there is one product that is closest and dearest to her heart: “I love SieMatic’s MultiMatic (below).” Not only does the storage accessories line help reclaim space that would otherwise be underutilized, it allows “you to place items wherever you want them to be,” she said. “It’s the most fun you can have in a kitchen.”
